Dassault Falcon 900 Development & Background
The Dassault Falcon 900 series traces back to the original Dassault Falcon 50, keeping the same tri-jet configuration and military-jet engineering derived from the Rafale fighter jets. Over the decades the 900 series underwent several evolutionary leaps: the original Falcon 900, then the 900B, 900EX and the modern 900LX.
Dassault Falcon 900 (Original)
The first Dassault Falcon 900 was introduced in 1984 as a replacement for the Dassault Falcon 50. The design featured three Honeywell TFE731 engines in an S-duct center-engine configuration, advanced composite materials (kevlar, titanium, carbon fiber) in key structural areas for weight savings. The fuselage was lengthened and widened compared to the Falcon 50, allowing 12-14 passenger layouts rather than eight-seats in the previous generation.
The end result was an aircraft that had between 3,900-4,500nm range depending on the profile, while retaining strong runway performance and high-altitude capability.
Dassault Falcon 900B
The Dassault Falcon 900B was introduced in 1991 after realizing the success of the original Falcon 900 variant. The Falcon 900B offered upgraded TFE-731-5BR engines for modest range improvements and better performance from smaller fields.
Dassault also upgraded the landing gear and avionics so the 900B can operate in more challenging airports and shorter runways.
Dassault Falcon 900EX
The Dassault Falcon 900EX was a major step forward for the series. Introduced in the early 2000s, operators noticed key technical upgrades such as the Honeywell TFE731-60 engines, redesign of the engine nacelles, pylons, S-duct centre engine intake, and added fuselage fuel tank capacity.
Engineers also equipped the 900EX with Honeywell Primus Epic suite avionics and the proven EASy flight deck. This allowed better situational awareness and reduced pilot workload for the cabin crew.
Dassault Falcon 900LX
The Dassault Falcon 900LX was launched at EBACE in May 2008 and certified in July 2010. Compared to the previous 900EX, the LX added high-mach blended winglets that gave a 7% drag reduction, improved climb performance by 10%, and extended the range to a whooping 4,750nm while keeping the trijet design.
Engineers also included the FalconEye Combined Vision System, modern digital cabin management, and steep-approach/short-field performance enhancements, responding to charter operators needing versatile global access.
