Embraer Legacy 650 Development & Background

Following the success of the Embraer Legacy 600, Embraer introduced the Legacy 650 in 20009, designed to deliver greater range, enhanced avionics, and improved cabin acoustics without compromising the Legacy 600’s renowned comfort and reliability.

Engineers kept the airframe of the ERJ-135, but with significant internal redesigns. Engineers added new fuel tanks in the tail section and wings, increasing total fuel capacity by 15%, which extended range by nearly 500 nautical miles compared to the Legacy 600.

The Rolls-Royce AE 3007A2 engines replaced the earlier A1E series, offering more thrust (8,100 lbf) and improved high-altitude performance. A reinforced wing box, enhanced landing gear, and upgraded pressurization system enabled smoother operations at higher weights and altitudes.

Embraer also modernized the cockpit with the Honeywell Primus Elite avionics suite, integrating advanced graphical displays, dual FMS, synthetic vision, and WAAS/LPV approaches for global operations.

Even though the Embraer Legacy 650 has some serious competition such as the Falcon 2000LX, Challenger 605, or the Gulfstream G280, the Legacy 650 has a larger cabin volume of 1,413 cubic feet, 15% lower direct operating costs, and proven airliner-level reliability.

In 2017, Embraer introduced the Legacy 650E, featuring even lower operating costs, 10-year warranty coverage, synthetic vision, and a redefined interior, reinforcing the aircraft’s reputation as one of the most dependable large business jets of its era.

In total, over 100 Legacy 650 aircraft were produced, signifying the success of the Legacy 650 and creating a stepping stone for the Embraer Praetor 600.
