IAI Astra/Gulfstream G100 Introduction

Originally designed by Israel Aerospace Industries, the Gulfstream G100 remains as one of the most unique collaborations in business aviation. During its time, the G100 was known for its remarkable speed, range, and climb performance, and became the foundation for the next generation super-midsize Gulfstream models.

Key Points: Why Charter the IAI Astra/Gulfstream G100?

  • Up to 2,860 nautical miles, perfect for U.S. coast-to-coast and Latin America routes.
  • 6–8 passengers with a flat-floor design.
  • Exceptional climb rate and cruise speed for its class.
  • Fuel-efficient Honeywell TFE731 engines with low operating costs.

Gulfstream G100 Development and Background

During the 1980s, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) wanted to create a more advanced version of the Westwind aircraft, which resulted in the IAI Astra SPX. After receiving certification in 1985, the IAI Astra SPX had three important improvements, alongside a larger cabin. The IAI Astra was given a supercritical wing, which delays the onset of shock waves at higher subsonic speeds. This design allows a smoother airflow over the upper wing and reduced wave drag, which helped increase airspeed near Mach 0.8+. Additionally, they gave the aircraft Garrett TFE731-40R engines, which offer better performance and fuel efficiency.

In 2001, Gulfstream acquired the program and rebranded it as the Gulfstream G100. They added U.S avionics (Rockwell Collins Pro Line 4), luxurious interiors, and improved the reliability; which made the pilots/owners lives easier to operate. The G100 created a stepping stone in what Gulfstream was going to offer in the super-midsize category.
