About the Gulfstream G500 Development
The Gulfstream G500 was first announced in 2014 as a replacement for the earlier Gulfstream G450. Development started in Gulfstream’s Savannah, Georgia facility, and the engineers spent thousands of hours of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and wind tunnel analysis, which helped redefine the aerodynamic surfaces of the wing. The G500 was also the first aircraft to use the Symmetry Flight Deck, powered by Honeywell’s Primus Epic avionics suite, featuring 10 touchscreen displays, active control sidesticks, and fly-by-wire technology. These systems significantly reduced pilot workload while improving flight precision and safety.
Engineers also gave the G500 two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA engines, each producing 15,144 lbs of thrust. As Gulfstream Aerospace is known for having a very transparent social media presence, future customers were showcased the meticulous testing of the G500 program, often tested in Artic, desert, and high elevation environments, proving uncompromising reliability in global operations.
The G500’s interior was designed in parallel with the new Gulfstream Cabin Management System (GCMS); a fully digital, touchscreen-controlled environment allowing passengers to manage lighting, temperature, and entertainment from personal devices.
The test pilots also achieved greater range than initially promised, 5,300 nautical miles at Mach 0.85, surpassing Gulfstream’s own projections. After being certified by both FAA and EASA in 2018, deliveries began shortly thereafter.
