Gulfstream GIV/GIVSP Introduction
“I know G4 pilots on a first name basis” - Forever by Lil Wayne & Drake
The Gulfstream GIV/SP was a rising star in its class during the 2000s, and shaped business aviation when they entered service in the late 1980s. The Gulfstream GIV/GIVSP, as mentioned by many owners and pilots, is a work-horse. With over 4,000 nautical miles of range (nonstop from New York to London or Los Angeles to Honolulu), excellent reliability, and a spacious cabin; executives, celebrities, and government officials commonly use the Gulfstream GIV/SP as their means of transportation.
At FlyRoving, we provide access to the Gulfstream GIV and GIV-SP, ensuring a trusted, seamless, and private travel experience to destinations across the globe.
Pilot Testimonial:
“The GIV is a rock-solid performer. Its Rolls-Royce Tay engines provide excellent climb rates and fuel efficiency, and the cockpit layout is intuitive for long-haul operations.
It’s one of the most reliable Gulfstreams I’ve flown.”
Client Insight:
“Flying from Los Angeles to New York on the GIV felt like traveling in a flying lounge. The wide cabin made it easy to work, relax, and enjoy dinner at 41,000 feet.”
About the Gulfstream G-IV/SP Development
In 1983, under the leadership of Allen Paulson, the world was shocked when Gulfstream released the Gulfstream GIV, and after being certified in 1987, celebrities and executives were responsible for over 500 deliveries worldwide.
The Gulfstream GIV program was developed to push the long-range business jet market beyond the capabilities of the GIII, focusing on greater efficiency, extended range, and a fully modernized flight deck. Engineering work began in the early 1980s, with Gulfstream targeting three core upgrades: a new-generation wing, more efficient powerplants, and a re-engineered cabin designed for intercontinental missions.
The major breakthrough was the adoption of the Rolls-Royce Tay 611-8 turbofan. Compared to the earlier Spey engines, the Tay delivered lower fuel burn, reduced noise, better reliability, and a meaningful increase in thrust. This engine choice drove several aerodynamic changes: Gulfstream redesigned the wing with reshaped leading edges, updated flap geometry, and a cleaner trailing edge to optimize performance at long-range cruise altitudes. The GIV also introduced a redesigned tail section and improved horizontal stabilizer for better control authority at high weights.
The cabin was built on a longer 45-foot fuselage, allowing a true stand-up interior with seating for 12–16 passengers. Systems were reworked for long-haul reliability, including upgraded electrical architecture, improved environmental controls, and more robust hydraulics. Gulfstream also introduced an early form of digital flight deck integration through the SPZ-8000 avionics suite, laying the foundation for the company’s signature cockpit philosophy.
In 1992, Gulfstream released the GIVSP (Special Performance) variant. Rather than a full redesign, it delivered targeted performance upgrades: refined avionics logic, better climb rates, improved weight-and-balance margins, and structural/cooling enhancements aimed at operators flying extreme-range or heavy-payload missions. The SP kept the same Tay engines but benefitted from aerodynamic smoothing and software revisions that improved real-world efficiency and allowed higher dispatch reliability.
