IAI Westwind II Development & Background

Introduced in 1980, the Westwind II represented the final and most refined evolution of the series. Building upon the proven Westwind I platform, IAI implemented key aerodynamic, structural, and avionics upgrades to enhance performance and passenger comfort. Key developments included new wingtip winglets to improve aerodynamic efficiency, reduce drag, and enhance stability. IAI also revised the airfoil and flaps providing a shorter takeoff and landing distance. The engineers also improved the hydraulics, air conditioning, and electrical systems for reliability.

These refinements enabled the Westwind II to fly farther and operate more efficiently than its predecessors, achieving a range exceeding 2,500 nautical miles.

Production of the Westwind II continued until 1987, when IAI transitioned focus to its successor, the IAI Astra (later the Gulfstream G100), though many Westwind IIs remain in service with private owners, corporations, and government agencies worldwide.
