Back in the 1960s, Bill Lear, founder of the Learjet, wanted to create a small, fast, and simple business jet. Introducing the Learjet 31/31A in 1988, which included a mix of the fuselage of the Learjet 35/36 and the high-performance Learjet 28/29, was considered a pilot’s airplane by many aviators, due to crisp handling, easy control, and an incredible cruise speed at 51,000ft, which is unheard of in light jets at the time. One of the drawbacks with the early Learjet 31/31A was the lack of internal luggage space (30 cu ft.). Raisbeck addressed the issue with an aft fuselage locker, which quadrupled the baggage capacity.

The baggage capacity wasn’t the only upgrade given to the aircraft. When Bill Lear released the Learjet 31/31A, electric windshield de-icing, Bendix/King avionics suite, and a FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control), two-zone climate control, and increased allowable takeoff and landing weights were given, showcasing the support the Learjet 31/31A had during its time.

Over the span of 35+ years, over 262 Learjet 31/31A units were built, with many variants being used for either charter or medevac.
