Learjet 60/60XR Development & Background

The development of the Learjet 60 began in the early 1990s as an evolution of the Learjet 55, which was part of the “Longhorn” family. After the acquisition of Learjet by Bombardier in 1990, they focused on modernizing the aging platform by giving it more speed, range, power, and an improved interior/cabin.

After the first flight in 1990, certification under FAR Part 25 followed in January 1993. Bombardier engineers took the Learjet 55’s fuselage and stretched it slightly for an improved cabin length of 17.7 feet. The nose and tail sections were redesigned for aerodynamic efficiency, and the new winglets helped reduce drag and improved fuel economy.

Over time, Bombardier introduced incremental upgrades. The Learjet 60SE added improved avionics, cabin materials, and soundproofing. Then, in 2007, Bombardier launched the Learjet 60XR, the most advanced and refined version, which received a full redesigned “executive suite” cabin by BMW Designworks, and updated environmental and power systems.
