Pilatus PC-12 Development & Background
In the late 1980s, Pilatus Aircraft Company had a goal to create a single-engine, pressurized aircraft that provides a utility in both cargo and passenger needs, while being given the ability to operate in almost any airstrip.
In 1991, the first flight took place, and after three years, the aircraft was certified, quickly becoming a global success. People who operated or purchased the Pilatus PC-12 noticed a rugged design, long range, and economical performance, making it ideal for civilian/medevac/cargo/and government use.
The PC-12 was equipped with the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67A, which was a great choice as it is an engine known for dependability and power efficiency. To ensure dependability, the aircraft was built with a robust aluminum airframe, which allowed high-cycle usage and rough-field performance. Pilatus also kept in mind to create a spacious interior, so they created a flat-floor cabin with a fully enclosed lavatory, pressurization system, and a club seating for up to eight passengers.
In 2006, the PC-12 NG (next generation) was introduced, this time with an improved engine (PT6A-67P), enhanced avionics (Honeywell Primus Apex), and improved performance. Remaining unchanged for 14 years, Pilatus revamped the model again with the PC-12 NGX, this time offering a newer engine (PT6E-67XP), autothrottle, upgraded avionics, and more efficient propeller, increasing cruise speed and range.
In 2025, Pilatus released the PC-12 PRO, generally focused on providing luxury VIP interiors and high-end configurations to their clients, while including many new safety features. The PRO variant was given autothrottle, an emergency autoland system, Smart Glide, Electronic Stability Protection, and a larger weather radar. They are also given an updated cockpit with a new Garmin G3000 Prime avionics system, which helps with risk management and situational awareness.
